Spike in armed robberies puts Joburg south on high alert

Johannesburg South residents on high alert as armed robberies surge - expert advice on how to stay safe

A recent spike in armed robberies has left Johannesburg South residents on high alert.

Within the Fidelity ADT footprint, seven incidents have been reported this week alone, with areas such as Winchester Hills, Mondeor, and Naturena being targeted.

Charnel Hattingh, group head of marketing and communications at Fidelity ADT, warns that criminals are becoming increasingly brazen and using clever tactics to gain access to homes.

To stay safe, Hattingh advises residents to follow these expert tips:

During a residential armed robbery:

1. Stay calm and obey the robbers’ orders.

2. Keep your hands visible and don’t reach for anything unless told to do so.

3. Don’t try to negotiate with them. Speak when spoken to and do so clearly.

4. Give them what they ask for and don’t lie about safes or cash in the home.

5. Observe the robbers and try to gather information on their appearances, voices, language used, etc.

6. Keep them informed so there are no surprises, like a family member arriving for a visit.

After the Incident:

Press your panic button/phone to alert your armed response service provider and/or phone the police on 10111.

• Lock all doors.

• Check on the victims. Keep everyone calm.

• Relate the incident clearly and in detail to the first responders.

• Try not to disturb areas the robbers were in and point out anything they may have left behind.

Business safety tips:

• Implement controlled entrances to prevent overcrowding.

• Be alert during opening and closing times.

• Work in pairs to prevent being surprised or overpowered by criminals.

• Train staff to ask for identification before allowing entry to the premises.

• Ensure all outside entrances and inside security doors have deadbolt locks.

• Install secure locks and burglar-resistant glass on windows.

• Light the inside and outside of your business, especially around doors, windows, and skylights.
