Gauteng police recover 141 illegal firearms in major crime crackdown
Over 140 unlicensed guns and more than 1 500 rounds of ammunition have been recovered in Gauteng during a month-long operation targeting illegal weapons and organised crime.
Gauteng police have recovered a cache of unlicensed firearms and ammunition as part of a sustained crime-fighting campaign, authorities confirmed this week.
Between May 24 and June 27, officers confiscated 141 unlicensed firearms and 1 577 rounds of ammunition during a series of targeted operations across the province.
The haul included automatic rifles, revolvers, pistols, and shotguns, some of which had serial numbers deliberately removed, making them difficult to trace.
The police seized these firearms during routine patrols, crime prevention initiatives, intelligence-led operations, and searches – all of which formed part of a broader effort to stem the flow of illegal weapons into communities.
Major General Mbuso Khumalo, acting provincial commissioner of Gauteng, praised the officers involved.
“These recoveries are a testament to the hard work and dedication of our members. Their continued efforts are crucial in safeguarding the people of Gauteng and disrupting the networks that fuel gun violence and crime,” Khumalo said.
The police stated that their work is far from over and that operations in known crime hotspots will be intensified.
Authorities are urging the public to assist in the fight against illegal firearms by reporting suspicious activities.
The Gauteng Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to public safety and community security, warning that the illegal possession and distribution of firearms will be met with the full force of the law.
