WATCH: MEC leads Turffontein service delivery blitz

The MEC said food parcels will be delivered to the homes of those who registered.

The Gauteng Department of Social Development (GDSD), led by MEC Faith Mazibuko, is demonstrating its commitment to delivering essential services directly to communities by working in close collaboration with key stakeholders.

On November 6, Mazibuko spearheaded a door-to-door campaign in Turffontein, south of Johannesburg, engaging residents to connect them with government programmes and services.

This outreach effort included street beggars, who were referred to relevant departments for further assistance, as part of the department’s initiative to reduce street begging and enhance the quality of life for vulnerable individuals.

Addressing officials assembled at Rotunda Park before the campaign began, Mazibuko stated, “Our purpose today through this campaign is to seek those who require help, whether it’s with unattended children or skills development and refer them to the relevant departments.”

“Gone are the days of begging in the streets or at busy intersections, even for those with disabilities. We are committed to linking individuals with the necessary departments to support them in overcoming their challenges, which is why we have brought different departments on board.”

One of the residents, a 34-year-old community member who preferred to remain anonymous, expressed her appreciation for the campaign.

“As a community, we need greater police visibility to help reduce crime and address unruly behaviour in the area.”
She highlighted concerns about safety, noting the prevalence of muggings and disturbances from local nightclubs.

In addition to local social development initiatives, the campaign saw the attendance of representatives from the Zimbabwe Consulate Office, who provided services including passport applications, temporary travel documents, birth certificates, and repatriation assistance.
