Bodies recovered in Wemmerpan Dam and Pennyville Quarry drownings

The victim was swimming with a friend before he encountered difficulty.

On January 25 at around 17:30, divers from Johannesburg Water Policing and Diving Services were deployed to a scene in Pennyville next to Florida.

On arrival at the scene, members proceeded to use an inflatable raft in a quarry where the body of an 18-year-old male was recovered in a depth of 3m and was handed over to Florida SAPS members at the scene for further investigations.

On January 26 at around 12:30, members were deployed to a drowning scene in Wemmepan Dam in Moffat View, and on arrival, members were informed that a 25-year-old victim was swimming with a friend before he encountered difficulty and was seen struggling before he vanished into the dam.

The victim was retrieved at a depth of 3m and was handed over to Moffat View SAPS members on the scene for further investigation.

Flying Squad media officer Raymond Sambo said inquest dockets were opened for both scenes for further investigation.
