Joburg Market champions agricultural research for sustainable farming in SA
The expo highlighted the importance of research and technology in shaping South Africa’s agricultural economy and combating climate challenges.

Joburg Market recently participated in the 17th annual Agricultural Research Symposium and Innovation Expo, hosted by the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (GDARD) in Roodeplaat, Pretoria.
The symposium brought together agricultural experts and master’s students who presented research findings on plant production and challenges within the sector. Discussions focused on innovative solutions and sustainable farming methods aimed at protecting the environment.
MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Vuyisile Ramokgopa, emphasised the crucial role of researchers in advancing food systems.
“Researchers are the backbone of a thriving agricultural economy. Their work enhances farming methods and agro-processing technology. With 35% of the continent’s agro-processing in South Africa, we must take pride in this achievement and strive for even greater progress.”
She encouraged researchers to engage with emerging farmers to ensure their research has a tangible impact. She highlighted the importance of leveraging technology to build localised food supply chains, improve efficiency, and adapt to climate change disruptions, such as excessive rainfall affecting crops.
Dr Maria Fernandes-Whalley from the National Metrology Institute of South Africa discussed the reliability of measurement standards for food and feed testing to boost intra-Africa trade. She stressed the importance of accurate pesticide testing, noting that incorrect results can lead to the unnecessary destruction of produce, causing food waste.
“Proper pesticide use ensures crop protection against pests and diseases while maintaining food safety standards,” shared Dr Fernandes-Whalley.
The symposium underscored the vital role of research, technology, and collaboration in strengthening South Africa’s agricultural sector, enhancing food security, and promoting sustainable farming practices.
