Miss Earth SA plants trees of change
The Miss Earth South Africa team, corporate partners and local children planted trees to honour Earth Day and inspire a new generation of eco-leaders.
As entries open for the Miss Earth South Africa Leadership group for 2025, the organisation and its partners celebrated Earth Day by planting trees at a creche in Klipspruit, Soweto.
Director Ella Bella Leite said, “The aim was to plant seeds of hope, intention and purpose with the children of the Dawn Creche in Soweto. We must teach young people how to look after and preserve our earth and its resources. We are not trying to save our planet; we are trying to save our people.”
With the support of Samsonite SA, Skin Renewal SA, Newsclip SA and 9Five Nutrients, they planted five fruit trees on the school grounds to encourage these young earthlings to take ownership of their space and understand the value of growing your own food.

After songs and dances from the older children of the neighbouring school, Lulama Primary, the Grade Rs were paired with Miss Earth South Africa executive director Catherine Constantinides, the Miss Earth first runner-up, Joy Magagula, and other volunteers when they shovelled, dug and planted together.
“Partnering with like-minded corporates and companies helps us invest in the education and experiences of these children at the Dawn Creche, and it allows us to invest directly into the next generation,” explained Constantinides.
“We are looking for the new cohort of the Miss Earth South Africa Leadership and Empowerment Programme and want to encourage young ladies between the ages of 18 and 26 to sign up, come learn and teach and change the world as we know it.
“We have several plans and projects lined up for these two schools – Lulama Primary and Dawn Creche – and we are excited to invite more people to get involved and help people and the planet. We need to nurture the children of Soweto and SA’s children so that their future is bright, green and prosperous.”
The objective was to instil a mindset that understands that every day is Earth Day.
Miss Earth South Africa has committed to ongoing support for education, greening and empowerment.
