Child killed, woman injured in tragic Alberton accident

A grieving resident has called for justice and clarity after his wife and neighbour’s child were hit by a reversing vehicle in Alberton North.

A tragic road incident on June 4 has left a family in mourning after a five-year-old child was fatally struck by a vehicle and a woman seriously injured in Alberton North.

The incident occurred at approximately 16:00, when Emily Makahamadze (34) and the young child were struck by a vehicle. Greatness Chihoro, partner of the injured woman and neighbour to the deceased child’s family, was notified by a bystander and rushed to the scene.

“When I arrived on the scene, I saw my partner and our neighbour’s daughter lying in the street. Netcare 911 paramedics and CPS Security were already there. Tragically, the young child was declared dead at the scene by paramedics,” Chihoro told the Alberton Record.

According to Chihoro, his partner had collected the child from pre-school and was walking her home at the time of the incident.

Footage from a nearby CCTV camera reportedly shows a white SUV pulling over to the side of the road. Moments later, the woman and child are seen crossing the street hand-in-hand. As they near the opposite pavement, the SUV reverses and strikes them both.

Makahamadze was initially rushed to Thelle Mogoerane Regional Hospital in Vosloorus and was later transferred to ICU at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital. She has since been moved to the trauma ward and is recovering from injuries sustained to her right leg and the left side of her body.

The following day, Chihoro visited the Alberton Police Station to enquire whether any arrests had been made. However, he reports that no information has yet been provided.

In his distress, Chihoro contacted the Alberton Record, expressing concern over the lack of communication from both the party involved in the incident and law enforcement.

“I just want answers and justice for my partner and for the little girl who lost her life,” he said.

At the time of going to print, no formal statement had been issued by authorities regarding the investigation.

The Alberton Record has reached out to local law enforcement for comment and will publish updates as they become available.
