VIDEO: Free electricity registration at Southgate and The Glen
City Power urges low-income residents to register for free basic electricity support as new tariffs take effect.
City Power is continuing its Free Basic Electricity (FBE) Campaign across Johannesburg’s Region F, allowing qualifying residents to register for free electricity support.
From July 14 to 15, officials will be at Southgate Mall, followed by The Glen Shopping Centre on July 16 and 17 to help people register.
To qualify for FBE, customers must:
- Be South African citizens
- Be the legal occupant of the household or property
- Be unemployed or have a combined household income of R7 503.01 or less per month
Residents must bring:
- A valid South African ID
- Proof of residence
- A recent City of Johannesburg rates and taxes account
- Proof of income (such as a SASSA card or payslip)
Why this matters
The registration drive forms part of City Power’s broader efforts to ease the burden of new electricity tariffs, which came into effect on July 1.
Approved by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa), the new tariffs include an average increase of 12.41% for the 2025/2026 financial year.
To cushion the blow for vulnerable residents, City Power has kept key relief measures in place, such as:
- 50kWh of free electricity per month for qualifying households
- No R70 service charge or R130 network capacity fee for those on the Residential Prepaid Low tariff (saving R200 monthly)
City Power encourages all qualifying households to take advantage of these pop-up registration points while they are available.
