Premier Basketball league sponsored by SuperSport

Mr Fikile Mbalula, Minister of Sport and Recreation

The newly formed Basketball National League (BNL) has announced a new five-year deal with SuperSport which will see the broadcaster show live coverage of the BNL.

The announcement took place on Tuesday September 3 at SuperSport.

“We are looking at a very important sponsorship for basketball and we can add this to our big sporting codes in South Africa,” said SASCOC’s Gideon Sam. “This sport can now only go forward and the players will need to step up in the newly formed league.”

This deal follows after SuperSport formed a deal with the NBA to broadcast the world popular sporting league across Africa. The BNL will run until 2017 and these matches will be shown live across the country. The league commences on September 27.

Albert Mokoena, Chairman of the BNL, said it was an “exciting time for basketball” in South Africa. “With SuperSport as our partners and our national league having the endorsement of the Ministry of Sport and Recreation, Sascoc and Basketball SA, our players can look forward to a league where the emphasis will be on a high-quality game combined with entertainment that appeals to the youth.”

The inaugural NBL will feature eleven teams, divided into northern and southern conferences. Egoli Magic, North West Goodfellas, Soweto Panthers, Mbombela Wildcats, Polokwane Trailblazers and the Tshwane Suns will play in the Northern Conference, with Cape Mountaineers, Kimberley Diamonds, Port Elizabeth Wind Breakers, Free State Golden Warriors and KZN Marlins competing in the south.
