Top Gun returns to the ring

TOMMY Oosthuizen will return to the ring when he will headline against Denis Grachev from Russia.

Chesa Nyama “Top Guns” boxing tournament will take place on Saturday November 15 at Emperors Palace. The pair will meet for the WBC International light-heavyweight title.

In the main undercard of the evening up and coming Kevin Lerena, 11-0, 7 KO’s, will be facing Johnny Muller, 16-4-2, 12 KO’s, at cruiserweight.

Additionally there is a welcome return to Emperors for Ali Funeka, 35-4-3, 29 KO’s, who demolished Jason Bedeman in a single round in his last outing at the HQ of SA boxing. He will face another Russian Roman Balaev, 14-0, 10 KO’s, for the IBO welterweight title.

When Oosthuizen steps through the ropes, it will be a year and six days since last doing so; a consequence of rank indiscipline and weight issues. While he claims to have sorted out his problems, the boxing fraternity will only know as the night draws closer. Grachev is a formidable opponent who figures to give the South African all he can handle in his debut at light-heavyweight.

Grachev has fallen to Ryno Liebenberg in a good argument losing the 12-rounder.

Oosthuizen on the other hand has a good boxing ability, but one will have to see what the effect of non-competitiveness has wrought upon him.

Muller seeks a desperate win, and who else will help to sort that opinion out than the young Lerena, who is on the up in the ring. He has had twice as many fights as Lerena, but stepping up to cruiserweight is a brave call for the popular Muller.

Junior-flyweight Thabang Ramagole also features on the much anticipated bill.
