Teaching your children test prep

If you have children who have already written tests and exams, studying has become second nature. But for parents whose children are entering a grade where they will start writing tests, teaching them how to study can be a bit daunting.
While high school students can focus for over an hour, children studying for the first time are unlikely to last more than 15 minutes on a single task.
Taking tests can be a traumatic experience for some children. Explain to your child that cramming the night before a test is not productive. Better to get a good night’s sleep.
Learners also need reminding that when taking a test; they should thoroughly and carefully read the directions before they start their tests.
Parents should advise their children to skip over questions for which they don’t know the answers. They can always return to those if there’s time.

Flash cards
Write the word on one side, the definition on the other, and test your child.
After your child has learned all of the cards, start with the definitions and see if they remember the word before turning over the flash card. Let them move around, thy will learn faster if they hear the words out loud (auditory learning) and get their bodies involved (kinesthetic learning).
Allow your child to take breaks, perhaps as a reward for finishing a section of the work.
