Forest High murder case: Mohamed Mwela sentenced to eight years in prison

On June 3, 2019, Mohamed Mwela stabbed Daniel Bakwela to death and stabbed another two of his schoolmates leaving them wounded.

Mohamed Mwela (22) was effectively sentenced to eight years imprisonment for the murder of his fellow Forest High School learner Daniel Bakwela in 2019.

On August 26 the following conviction was handed down:

• Count one which was for the murder – 10 years direct imprisonment of which two years is suspended for five years.

• Count two and three were for attempted murder – three years imprisonment to run concurrently with the murder count.

The accused was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

Booysens SAPS communications officer Capt Lorraine van Emmerik said on June 3, 2019, at about 05:45 the complainant, who is a member of the Community Service Centre at Booysens Police Station, reported on duty.

“At about 11:53 the member received a complaint of a stabbing that took place in Forest Hill next to the high school.

Upon arrival, the member noticed a lot of children standing with a young boy that was lying on the ground. The paramedics were called and they declared the young boy deceased.

“The scene was handed over to the Serious and Violent Crimes Unit at Booysens Police Station and they started to work on information received. It was also found more children had been stabbed. A suspect was later arrested during the day.

“The docket was handed to Sgt Mulalo Ramashia to investigate and obtained all the required information,” explained van Emmerik.

She said the management of Booysens SAPS would like to thank Ramashia and all the other role players for their dedication in obtaining a guilty conviction.
