Involuntary fast food fast
By Helene Eloff
If a genie pops out of his lamp right now, I will not ask for fame, fortune or riches. It’ll be a quick: “Three burgers, please.” Or better yet: “A burger, a soft serve swirly ice cream and pizza!” Does this have your mouth watering? You are not alone. In fact, you form part of an international fast food craving society brought about by the 2020 Covid-19 lockdown.
We’ve all been staying inside in order to flatten the curve.
“Flattening the curve” is a term used to describe the attempt to slow the rate of infection, so that a spike representing an increasing number of infections on a graph improves into a gentle slope.
Take-away outlets have been closed for exactly 33 days, 16 hours and 56 minutes. And although the curve is flattening, the craving has never spiked this high in my life.
And it seems like I am not alone. When government announced that restaurants will be able to deliver food between 9am and 8pm from May 4, fast food junkies (and everyone else) could let out a tremendous sigh of relief. For now, we are limited to delivered take-aways.
Personally I don’t mind – I will eat my dunked wings wherever government wants me to. As long as I can have them. Pronto!

Fast food is popular
What’s not to love? To state the obvious, fast food is fast. It gets prepared quickly and provides consumers with an entire meal – no fingers lifted, except for the post-meal licking of said fingers. It is generally inexpensive and tastes good. Some consumers fear that high-fat ingredients, refined grains and added sugar and fats may render take-aways unhealthy. The good news is that, these days, nearly every fast food chain has healthy meal options. Take-out establishments are also required to be upfront about the contents of their meals. If you make the effort, you can determine the contents of what you are about to eat before taking your first bite.
Some local restaurants have decided to make and deliver meals. This means that you are by no means limited to the burgers, chips and shakes that we associate with fast foods. Pick up the phone and call your favourite local eatery. You might be able to order your all-time favourite, hearty and wholesome dish.

Social Media joins in on
the crave
For the last month, social media users have been sharing their cravings in detail, leaving friends with nothing to take away but their very own cravings. Have your friends been tickling your taste buds – albeit virtually?
I swear I will devote my entire life to a dunked chicken wing right now,” one friend’s status remarked tongue-in-cheek after government announced that the option of delivered meals awaits us. Two other Facebook users launched a burger versus fried chicken discussion that went on for hours. The outcome was this: as long as you order in, there are no rules as to what you can indulge in. Because on May 4, any take-away will do.
