Warning to motorists to renew vehicle licence discs
The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has issued an urgent warning to over 1.6 million South African drivers to renew their vehicle licence discs before the end of 2024.
With the festive season fast approaching, the RTMC is urging motorists to address administrative issues such as licence disc renewals to avoid legal consequences.
Increased policing and traffic enforcement are expected as authorities prepare to ensure road safety during the busy holiday period.
The National Traffic Information System (Natis) has revealed that 624 333 vehicle licence discs are set to expire at the end of November, with a further 1 026 269 discs due to expire by the end of December 2024.
“Motorists can conveniently renew vehicle discs online via the Natis website at online.natis.gov.za This service allows for discs to be delivered directly to an address of the driver’s choice,” said the RTMC.
In addition to renewing vehicle licence discs, the RTMC reminded drivers to ensure their driving licence cards remain valid.
Driving without a valid licence card is an offence that carries legal penalties, and motorists are advised to always carry their valid cards while driving.
The festive season brings an increase in traffic on South Africa’s roads, making heightened law enforcement and road safety campaigns critical.
The Department of Transport, alongside provincial authorities, have already launched a series of stricter policing measures aimed at reducing accidents and fatalities.
One of the key initiatives this year is the Johannesburg Metro Police Department’s (JMPD) “three-strike” system.
Vehicles found with three or more critical defects – such as leaking engine oil, faulty brakes, worn tyres, expired licences, and cracked windscreens – will be impounded immediately.
This initiative aims to reduce accidents caused by unroadworthy vehicles.
As part of a broader strategy to improve road safety, the Department of Transport plans to implement a 24/7 traffic policing system by 2025, which will see increased visibility of officers and stricter enforcement of traffic laws across the country.
In addition to checking licence discs and driving licence cards, the RTMC recommends that motorists ensure their vehicles are in good condition before hitting the road.
Critical checks include brakes, steering racks, lights, tyres, and windscreen wipers.
Drivers should also carry a spare wheel and emergency toolkit.
Before embarking on long journeys, it is essential to plan – check for road construction or closures along your route and monitor weather conditions to anticipate any rain or adverse conditions.
The RTMC also advises against driving at night whenever possible. If driving during the day, switching on headlights can enhance visibility and reduce the risk of accidents.
With the festive season around the corner, the RTMC stresses the importance of taking proactive steps to ensure safe and lawful travel on South Africa’s roads.
