Well done Matrics!

Those longs hours behind their books have paid off for many matric learners in Limpopo, with the province sporting a 7% increase in its pass rate. The percentage of learners who passed the national senior certificate exam increased from 72,1% last year to 79,5% this year.

Many parents are concerned about the state of education and keep an eagle’s eye on the results each year. The results are key to their kids’ futures as it determines whether they will gain access to tertiary institutions, qualify for bursaries or need to repeat their Grade 12 year.

The Waterberg District is seventh of the nine districts despite the 7% increase. Last year it placed second with an average of 77,5%. The best-performing school districts were Mopani West (83,8%), Capricorn South and Vhembi East.

Though a school’s pass rate does not give the full picture of its performance, it is an important indicator. Other measurements are the level of passes as indicated by the number of Bachelor, diploma and higher certificate passes it obtains. Good performance in the so-called STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and maths), is another indicator of quality education that may open doors for these young adults. An analysis of this year’s matric results shows that there has been a significant increase in the maths pass rate as this has been a major concern for several years. According to the National Senior Certificate (NSC) Exam Results Technical Report, it has increased from 55% in 2022 to 63,5% in 2023.

In the Vaalwater/Alma area Meetsetshehla Secondary School 57,8% (60,2%), Leseding High School 84,3% (96,2%), Mohlakamotala High School 77,3% (79,2%).

In Modimolle-area the Settlers Agricultural High School obtained 69,9% (83,1%), Phagameng High School 77,4% (84,4%), Solomon Mahlangu High School 67,9% (74,5%) and Hoërskool Nylstroom 97,2% (97,4%).

Liané Louw from Hoërskool Hans Strijdom obtained four A’s.

In the Mookgophong / Roedtan area Roedtan Combined School 100% (82,4%), Hoërskool Hans Strijdom 96,6% (100%), Letamong Combined School 100% (50%).

William Nicolson-Geyer from Hoërskool Warmbad obtained six A’s.

In the Bela Bela circuit Hoërskool Warmbad achieved a pass rate of 96% (98%), Vingerkraal Secondary School 90%, Raeleng Secondary School 85%, Bela Bela High School 81%, Ulando Combined School 88%, Batho Pele School 70,8%, Maope Secondary School 70%.

Marisa Meyer from Hoërskool Piet Potgieter in Mokopane was a top performer with six distinctions.

Hoërskool Piet Potgieter in Mokopane achieved a 89,1% pass rate. The top achiever is Marisa Meyer with six distinctions.

Political parties have pointed out that schools still face major challenges such as a shortage of experienced and well-educated educators, enough classrooms and a culprit that causes havoc in schools is overcrowding in classrooms.
