Phagameng High School learners aim high
Let the distinctions roll in! Phagameng High School in Modimolle is extremely proud of its matric group.

Phagameng High School, the largest school in the district, had 288 learners who wrote the matric exam in 2023, with 223 of them who obtained a pass result. The school achieved 78 bachelor passes, with 85 for diplomas and 60 for higher certificates
Their top learner, Tsakani Chauke achieved six distinctions during the matric exams in English First Additional Language, Mathematics, Life Orientation, Geography, Life Sciences and Physical Sciences. Tsakani boasts an impressive 97% for her maths mark! Her average was 88,4%.

She hopes to study medicine at the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein. “My journey was not a simple one, but I can proudly say that I have learned a lot through tough situations,” she said. On her study methods, she said that she made sure to read a chapter before the educator introduced it in class, which helped her understand better when the educator explained the work.
Fortune Mokonyane achieved five distinctions in Maths Literacy, Accounting, Business Studies, Life Orientation and Economics. Her average was 83,2%. Fortune plans on studying at the University of Pretoria to become a senior phase and FET educator.
“My favourite memories are from my matric camp… it was fun interacting with learners from other schools, exchanging our knowledge and being taught by educators from different schools,” she said.
The principal, Maggie Laka, said that she is extremely proud of this matric group. “I had hoped we’d be able to increase our pass rate to 90%, but unfortunately it declined from last year’s 84,4% to 77,4%.” She is however a firm believer in hard work makes the dream work and this year’s 224 matric learners are working to achieve the 90% goal. The school increased its pass rate in 2022 by 22% from 61,8% to 84,4%.
