It is that time of the year again, when long-distance runner Lucas Seleka embarks on a 44km running event from Modimolle to Katjibane village, in an endeavour to raise sanitary towels for a girl child.
The 44km running event will start at 5:00 on the morning of Saturday 21 December, and was expected to finish in Katjibane in a space of five hours.
Last year a total of 350 packs of sanitary towels were collected through this event, and were later distributed amongst the five schools located in the village.
Seleka, who was born and bred in Katjibane, later moved to Modimolle where he is currently residing.
The athlete is known for his annual participation in the popular running event, the Comrades Marathon.
He told The BEAT that he has already started receiving donations for this year’s event, and further pleaded with members of the public to buy at least a pack when they do shopping to support
the initiative.
“I also buy a pack or two when I do shopping and throw them into the hamper. I really appreciate the support from the community. Without their support, we would not succeed in our attempts to
sustain the dignity of the girl child,” he said.
This time around Seleka will be running alongside yet another popular runner from Gauteng, Sibusiso “Mnandi Bus” Mlangeni.
Upon arrival at the village of Katjibane, the runners will be received by the local community which also pledged to contribute to the course.
Those who want to contribute or to seek clarity can contact Lucas Seleka on 073 148 9470.
