The 2019 highs and lows of football

Soccer lovers in the Waterberg region and across the entire province had a year full of joyful moments, and also some which many would like to forget.

Soccer lovers in the Waterberg region and across the entire province had a year full of joyful moments, and also some which many would like to forget.

The 2018/19 season of the Waterberg Men’s Regional League (previously known as SAB League) ended on a sad note for football lovers in the region, after Waterberg champions Modimolle Terrors FC
was sent packing from the provincial play-offs, for promotion into the ABC Motsepe League.

On a positive note though, the team returned to the regional league on a high note when the 2019/20 season kicked off.

The Modimolle-based team is currently on position two on the league log table, with seven wins and only one loss.

There was also a moment of high drama in the ABC Motsepe League as the 2018/19 was nearing an end.

As the then champions Madritas FC of Limpopo were gearing up for the national play-offs, the SAFA disciplinary committee docked the team a whopping 62 points, after they were found guilty of
fielding a player who was reportedly registered illegally.

The decision by the disciplinary committee saw the team moving from the top of the log standings, and went straight to relegation.

The second-positioned team Mikhado FC was then sent to the national play-offs to represent Limpopo, but did not do well.

Cape Town’s Steenberg United FC and the Pretoria-based JDR Stars FC reached the final at the ABC Motsepe National play-offs, and were subsequently promoted to the National First Division’s
GladAfrica Championship.

Limpopo’s Tshakhuma Tsha Madzhivhandila FC continues to make the home province proud, and still have a fighting chance with 19 points on fifth position.

In the ABSA Premiership, the performance by the home teams leaves much to be desired, with Polokwane City sitting on position 14, while Baroka FC occupies position 12.

The tenth-placed Black Leopards FC is however promising to make it into the top eight.

Lidoda Duvha, as the Venda team is affectionately known, is only a point behind the teams that are sitting from position five to eight consecutively.
