Lord Milner chess team shines at Gauteng championship
In the realm of strategic thinking, the Lord Milner Primary School’s (LMPS) chess team stood tall as they participated in the Gauteng Inter-Regions Chess Championship, a prestigious tournament that brought together young minds from different districts.

This event, held from Sunday 3 December 2023 to Sunday 14 January showcased the best chess players who had triumphed in their respective districts.
Lord Milner School demonstrated excellence at the district level, with seven of its talented under-12 learners earning the honour of representing the Capricorn District. These remarkable individuals not only represented their district but also carried the pride of the entire Limpopo Province as they faced off against formidable opponents from Gauteng and North-West.
The commendable representatives from LMPS were Geraldine Machaba, Anotida Gwewera, Olwethu Mkandla, Reikantse Dibetso, Rorisang Lekalakala, Oletta Mafafo, and Makobeli Kobeli.
The culmination of months of preparation and anticipation led to the heartfelt arena in Pretoria on the 13th and 14th of January. This venue witnessed a gathering of chess enthusiasts from various age groups, ranging from under 8 to under 20, who engaged in intense battles of intellect and strategic planning.
The LMPS chess team, undeterred by the fierce competition, played five rounds with remarkable skill and determination. Winning two of their matches, each member displayed sportsmanship on the chessboard. Oletta Mafafo, a standout performer, went above and beyond, securing victory in three matches and drawing one, showcasing exceptional talent and resilience.
Principal, Alta Hitchcock, extended a heartfelt gratitude to the parents of the participating learners for their unwavering support. Their commitment played a crucial role in ensuring that the students could partake in this challenging tournament, enriching their educational experience beyond the classroom.
Special recognition was also given to Edwin Mazhata (educator), whose coaching and organisational efforts were instrumental in preparing and guiding the LMPS chess team. His dedication to fostering a passion for chess and honing the skills of the young players contributed significantly to the success achieved at the championship.
The Gauteng Inter-Regions Chess Championship not only provided a platform for friendly competition but also showcased the immense talent and dedication of the teams.
As these young minds continue to grow and evolve, the chessboard remains a canvas for them to paint strategic masterpieces, leaving an indelible mark in the world of competitive chess.
