Become a puppy raiser for guide dogs
Become a puppy raiser and change lives with the South African Guide-Dogs Association for the Blind
The South African Guide-Dogs Association for the Blind is calling on passionate, caring individuals to open their hearts and homes as puppy raisers.
To join them in transforming adorable, energetic puppies into life-changing guide dogs for those who are visually impaired.
Nicole Barros of the association explained the journey as a puppy raiser. “Raising a guide dog puppy is a rewarding journey that begins when the puppy is just eight weeks old and lasts until they are around 16 months. During this time, puppy raisers attend weekly training sessions at our facility and participate in outings to public places to help socialise and train the puppies.

“You’ll have the opportunity to include your furry friend in your daily activities, outings, and adventures.” She added that while some restrictions applied during the first 16 weeks, after this period, the puppies returned to their training centre for formal instruction.
“You’ll still enjoy weekends and holidays with your puppy, watching as they grow into confident guide dogs ready to serve. Once training is complete, the dogs are matched with their new owners, ready to bring independence and joy to another family.”
Becoming a puppy raiser is more than just caring for a puppy; it’s about shaping the future of a guide dog that will help someone navigate the world with confidence and independence. Your dedication and love will create a life-changing partner for someone in need, creating ripples of positive change in their life and yours.
