Local cyclist pedals for a purpose at Ride Joburg race
With his wife and community behind him, cyclist Mauritz van den Heever joined the #Ride4Rare team at this year’s 947 Ride Joburg, helping raise over R200 000 for Rare Diseases South Africa.
Local cyclist Mauritz van den Heever turned his 947 Ride Joburg challenge into a heartfelt mission to raise funds and awareness for Rare Diseases South Africa (RDSA), a cause close to his family’s heart.
Inspired by his wife, Elindi van den Heever, who lives with a rare condition and serves as an RDSA ambassador, Mauritz joined the #Ride4Rare team and helped raise more than R200 000 through the initiative.

Reflecting on the experience, Mauritz said the event was unlike any other ride he has done before. “The overall experience was fantastic. Cycling with a charity group turns it into something very special.
Riding out with the other charities and seeing hundreds of people cycling together for a cause was truly inspiring. Everyone should experience it at least once.”

He said the response from family, friends, and the community was overwhelmingly positive. “The support was great, and having my wife there meant so much. It’s a nice way to be part of something that affects those close to you.”
Elindi expressed her gratitude to everyone who supported the campaign. “To everyone who donated, to Rare Diseases SA for organising it, the families who came to cheer on the riders, and to the riders themselves, thank you for creating awareness and raising funds. It means the world to all of us,” she said.
According to Judy McBean of Rare Diseases South Africa, this year’s #Ride4Rare campaign was an incredible success.

“The energy from riders, supporters, and volunteers was inspiring. We had 43 riders proudly representing RDSA this year, and together they raised just under R200 000,” she said.
The funds will go toward patient support programmes, treatments, therapies, and awareness initiatives that improve the quality of life for those affected by rare diseases.
McBean said individuals such as Mauritz played a vital role in raising awareness. “Mauritz rides with passion for his wife, and his story inspires others to take action. Sport is a powerful platform for change.”
As for Mauritz, he’s already looking forward to next year’s race. “If you’re thinking about it, just do it. You’re not just riding; you’re changing lives.”
