Germiston Scout learner supports SPCA with animal food donation drive
A Grade 12 learner from Germiston combined his passion for animals and community service by collecting and donating animal food to the Germiston Bedfordview SPCA as part of his journey towards achieving the prestigious Springbok Scout Award.
Josh Cilliers, from the 1st Germiston Scout troop, donated animal food items to the Germiston Bedfordview SPCA on June 2.
The donation followed a drive held at Lambton Gardens, where members of the public were invited to drop off animal food items between 08:00 and 16:00.
As part of his scouting journey, Cilliers is required to take part in community service initiatives. As a young man with a deep appreciation for animals, he chose to support animal welfare.

He said his love for animals started at a young age and that he understands many animals do not have proper shelter or living conditions.
“I remember when I was very young, I was a Cub Scout at the time, and I came to this SPCA. There was a little white dog and I played with it,” said Cilliers.
“I have volunteered here many times over the years. It is such a full-circle moment to come here now as a Scout to donate items and see how this SPCA has grown.”
Cilliers, a Grade 12 learner at Alberton High School, has also been granted the opportunity to work on yachts in America.

He hopes to work his way up to becoming the captain of the yacht he will be working on.
“I have been sailing since I was six years old. I have sailed provincially and nationally. I then met someone who presented me with the opportunity to work on yachts in America,” he said.

“I’m prepared to start from the ground, polishing and cleaning the yachts, to eventually be the captain of the yacht.”
Cilliers’ journey in scouting has been a fascinating one, earning him various badges along the way.
He explained that he joined the Scouts after seeing a sign and started as a Cub, and now his working towards his Springbok ranks.
“I have various badges that represent different skills that I have acquired, as well as badges that represent advancement I have completed and courses I have attended,” he said.

He added that scouting helps develop young men and women into responsible young adults.
Besides scouting and sailing, Cilliers also plays touch rugby and rugby.
He encouraged the community to support the SPCA and get involved in community activities.
“I think it is important to take part in community service and give back to the community. There is a level of humbleness that comes with visiting places such as the SPCA and old age homes,” he said.

Cilliers added that they collected 80kg of putty to help fix windows at an old-age home in Primrose, an activity being planned for July.
“I am extremely grateful for my family as well as the adult leaders who have been by my side since the beginning of my scouting career,” said Cilliers.
He adds that he is appreciative for all his supporters from the community and all the younger Scouts who look up to him.
The 17-year-old, who is turning 18 in November, now shifts his focus to his studies and mid-year exams.
The Germiston Bedfordview SPCA extended its sincere thanks to Cilliers for his awesome initiative and generous support.
“It was truly heartwarming to meet a young man with such a caring and giving spirit. Josh, your kindness and willingness to make a difference remind us that compassion has no age limit and that every act of kindness matters,” said admin and support manager Roxanne Bredenkamp.

“Thank you for thinking of our animals and for taking the initiative to help those who cannot speak for themselves. Your support means more than words can express and will make a real difference in the lives of the animals in our care.
“From every wagging tail and grateful purr at the Germiston Bedfordview SPCA, thank you,” said Bredenkamp.
