TV weekly must watch
Three great shows you should keep an eye out for this week. Start with a drama series based on an award-winning novel about life in the dystopia of Gilead. Then watch a detective inspector and his team tirelessly investigate crimes in their close-knit island community in Scotland.
Or opt for a true crime docuseries that tells the descent from a loving mother to a murderous member of a doomsday cult
Adapted from the classic novel by Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid’s Tale is the story of life in the dystopia of Gilead, a totalitarian society in what was formerly the United States, where the few fertile women, known as Handmaids, struggle to survive as reproductive surrogates. In Season 5, June faces consequences for killing Commander Waterford, while struggling to redefine her identity and purpose. The widowed Serena attempts to raise her profile in Toronto as Gilead’s influence creeps into Canada. Commander Lawrence works with Nick and Aunt Lydia as he tries to reform Gilead and rise to power. June, Luke and Moira fight Gilead from a distance as they continue their mission to save and reunite with Hannah. Thursdays from September 15 on Showmax.
Set against the stunning and hauntingly barren backdrop of the Shetland Islands, it follows Detective Inspector Jimmy Perez as he returns home to give his step-daughter a secure and peaceful upbringing in this remote, isolated community. However, Jimmy soon finds himself tasked with getting to the bottom of many mysterious murders, such as the killing of a teenage girl with a dark secret, the death of a journalist friend who may have uncovered a story that cost him his life, and the murder of a scientist on the beautiful island of Fair Isle. Binge-watch the first four seasons of Shetland on BritBox.
Lori Vallow was known to friends and family as a devoted mother of three, a loving wife, and a woman of God. But over the past three years, something went very wrong: Now Lori is in jail, waiting to stand trial for conspiracy to commit murder and first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of her fourth husband, her fifth husband’s wife, and her two youngest children. For the first time, Lori’s surviving son Colby steps forward to provide exclusive insight into his family’s backstory as well as their present-tense narrative as Lori faces justice. Watch Sins of Our Mother from September 14 on Netflix.
