Kloof and Highway SPCA’s Sarah pedals for paws

Sarah Van Heerden raised more than R125 000 with the help of many supporters.

THE Kloof and Highway SPCA is proud of their operations manager, Sarah Van Heerden, who cycled 1 700 km for the SPCA. With the help of many supporters, Van Heerden raised more than R125 000 which she said far exceeded her expectations.

Knowing that the SPCA gets results; knowing that they have the support of one of the most amazing communities; knowing that cruelty cannot go unpunished, and looking into the eyes of so many animals and knowing you are their only hope is what she says keeps her motivated to work at the Kloof and Highway SPCA.

Van Heerden started working at the SPCA after realising that you can only really be happy and successful if you do something you absolutely love.

After the ride, journey and adventure, she said she was beyond grateful and left the Cape with a full heart and happy heart seven days and 1 700km later.

“The ride was gruelling and relentless, and the 53 mountain passes were spectacular. There was night riding in the pitch black; it was sometimes freezing and sometimes sublime, but it was so much more than that.”

She said that naturally the animals were foremost on her mind.

“Seeing so many dogs on chains with barely a kennel for shelter in smaller towns only motivated me more to keep our Kloof and Highway SPCA so active in fighting animal cruelty. Education and outreach are paramount, and your support has contributed to this.

Then, we saw the beauty of Greyton where we were greeted by three horses strolling through the town who are respected and loved.

“One last thing – we have a beautiful country, we must appreciate it, visit the far away places, and love your life because we are the fortunate ones. Be grateful and always try to make a difference.”
