Wisaam in the Grade 3 Lebelo Sprint

Jack Milner

Wisaam was a shock loser last time.

Wisaam.

New Year is upon us and that means the running of the Grade 3 Lebelo Sprint over 1000m at Turffontein today.

This is a handicap and these quick dashes up the straight are often difficult to decipher. This race is no different. We have the usual suspects in One Man’s Dream, Greasepaint, Tiger Territory, Mod Barley and Viking Hero while there are two younger runners – three-year-old Wisaam and four-year-old filly Jo Malone.

Viking Hero had to handle a tough defeat at Turffontein on Tuesday night when he led until the final stride. To the naked eye Grant Maroun’s gelding looked to have held on but the photofinish showed Kapellmeister had got up in the final stride.

That was over 1160m and he might be a little better over this 1000m. He is up in class but will carry 7kg less. Karl Zechner takes the ride.

However, perhaps Wisaam can make back some of the losses incurred last time when he went down to Manx Park. The Mike de Kock-trained runner went off at 1-4 in that event but was reported to having made a respiratory noise. He carries just 52 kg and with Muzi Yeni up could get away from his opposition.

Corne Spies has his runners in top form so don’t ignore the chances of Jo Malone. She went down just 0.75 lengths to African Ruler last time in a Graduation Plate and must come into the reckoning.

Wisaam was a shock loser last time but there were excuses and with just 52kg on his back the Mike de Kock-trained runner could have the edge in the Grade 3 Lebelo Sprint at Turffontein today.
