EKURHULENI – In promoting a better hygienic life for girls, Clr Dorah Mlambo, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, acting on behalf of the executive mayor, handed over sanitary towels to 295 girls from Daragan Secondary School, in Marangu. Tanzanania.
This was during the activation of the Caring4Girls leg of the Trek4 Mandela campaign, an initiative of the Imbumba Foundation, which seeks to raise funds for sanitary towels for 270 000 girls around the country.
“It is very important that we carry on with the vision of Nelson Mandela of giving to those who are less fortunate than us. As the City of Ekurhuleni we are proud and honoured to be part of this noble programme,” said Mlambo.
“We are here to promote the spirit of humanity which characterised Madiba’s actions of extending our love and care for others.
”This time, to make this programme even more special, we would like to go a little further beyond the borders of South Africa and to one of the countries that played an important part in the liberation struggle of our country.”
Mlambo explained that the city’s programme to empower needy girls in the region is gaining momentum and a number of sanitary towels will be distributed to local scholars as soon as possible.
“We are committed to the cause and, as a founding member of Trekking for Mandela, we would like to encourage private companies to come on board and do the right thing. Our girls need us.”
Before handing over the sanitary towels to the school, the MMC encouraged the girls never to lose hope and to remember that they hold their future in their own hands.
The MMC is part of the Trek4Mandela team led by Mandela Foundation CEO Sello Hatang.
Other members include CEOs from various South African companies, as well as the country’s celebrity personalities who will attempt to summit the 5 895m mountain peak as part of a fund-raising campaign for sanitary towels.
The South African team began their climb on Saturday, July 18, to mark Madiba’s birthday.
The Imbumba Foundation’s Richard Mabaso said the target of the campaign is to reach two million girls by 2020.
