Bumper to Bumper hits illegal hawkers

The EMPD recently embarked on a campaign to clean up the sidewalks occupied by illegal hawkers in Thokoza and Katlehong, confiscating goods worth thousands of Rands.

 

The main streets targeted during the blitz were Khumalo, Hospital and Kgotso. The operation was launched at 2pm and continued until late into the night, ending at 10pm.

Goods confiscated during the raids included;

· Two thousand (2,000) counterfeit DVDs

· Thirty-one (31) cartons of illegal cigarettes

· Thirty (30) travel bags,

· Ten (10) counterfeit Nike and Uzzi hats

· Eight (8) fake Nike and Reebok T-shirts

· Twenty-four (24) backpacks

· Two (2) pairs of pants.

EMPD officers added to the haul 58 dressed mannequins, 42 purses, various portable electrical appliances, taps, door handles, belts and shoes and dangerous rat poison. The hawkers bolted and left their wares when they saw metro police officers approaching their stalls.

One hawker, using a “rented” permit was slapped with a R200 fine for obstructing pedestrians on a sidewalk and was also issued with a written warning for operating with a permit not issued in his name.

Hawkers whose goods were confiscated were advised to reclaim them at the EMPD storage rooms in Vosloorus. They have been asked to bring with them their operating permits as well as R200 towards a fine for obstructing the sidewalk, including a storage fee of R150.
