Cancer awareness run/walk held in Katlehong
“I realise that people in the township may not know much about cancer, so we have to bring awareness to them.”
Zazzle Event Company based in Katlehong held their Ekasi Cancer Awareness Run/Walk at the Huntersfield Stadium in Katlehong on October 6.
More than 700 people took part in the 5km walk and 8km run around the streets of Katlehong on the day.
The event started from the stadium, and proceeded to Shongweni and Motloung sections, ending at the starting point.
Founder of the company Mpho Mongane said the purpose of the event was to raise awareness about cancer and to provide information to the community of Katlehong.
“I realise that people in the township may not know much about cancer, so we have to bring awareness to them.
“We want people to be aware of what causes the disease, what to eat and what not to eat and how to provide support to people who live with the disease.”
Mongane said testing and screening facility through a mobile clinic was provided on the day, with residents urged to avail themselves to be tested.

She said years ago, she saw her aunt suffer and die of cervical cancer. She recalled that this was a painful experience for her which has prompted her to take the initiative to help others to become aware of cancer.
Mongane said: “I am happy about the success of the event and the feedback I received from the people. The response from the community was positive. Others even gave me some pointers as to what to do when we organise such an event next time.”
The event was followed by aerobics, cultural performances and speeches by speakers from different organisations.
