Couple arrested for assault in Katlehong

Katlehong police arrested a couple in Khumalo Section after allegedly assaulting patrolling officers.

Katlehong police recently arrested a man and woman, aged 46 and 31 years old respectively, for assault of a police officer and for failing to comply with police orders.

The arrests were made while police were on patrol in Khumalo Section, in Katlehong.

“Officers decided to visit Sontonga Mall, as part of the patrol, with the aim of increasing police visibility in order to prevent robberies,” explained corporate communications official for the Katlehong police Capt Mega Ndobe.

“When they arrived at the mall, they discovered there was no movement in the parking lot and motorists did not appear to be entering or leaving.”

Officers investigated the cause and discovered a Toyota Conquest was parked in the way, facing oncoming traffic.

“Police approached the driver and asked him to move his vehicle.

“He ignored the officer and closed his window,” said Ndobe.

Officers forced the man out the vehicle.

“During the scuffle, the man allegedly bit one of the officers on the arm.

“His wife, who was also in the vehicle, exited the vehicle and struck another officer on the head with an unknown object,” Ndobe explained.

Police used pepper spray and minimal force to overpower the couple.

“After they had subdued the couple, officers discovered the couple’s one-week-old baby was also in the vehicle,” said Ndobe.

Katlehong SAPS acting station commander Col Loyiso Dunjwa appealed to the community of Katlehong to obey the rules and work together with police and not against them.

“It is against the law to assault an officer,” said Dunjwa.

In addition to the charges, the couple may also receive a fine for obstructing traffic.

The pair has since appeared in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court.
