Chief whip supports programme for matrics
Dlabathi said they have also requested parents to play a role in monitoring and supporting their children in education.
Tlakula High School’s matric pass rate improved by 20 per cent, from 57 per cent in 2017 to 77 per cent. ANC chief whip of council Clr Jongizizwe Dlabathi visited the school on January 15. His visit was part of an ongoing commitment since his office adopted the school to improve the school’s matric results in mathematics, science and accounting.
A meeting to draw up a plan of action was also held by school management, officials from the district office, school governing body (SGB) members, DJ Cleo Foundation, Ntsane Masiloane Enrichment Programme, Palesa Ya Sechaba and office of the chief whip.

“We visited the school to assess how they have performed academically. We are happy that the school has improved from 57 per cent to 77 per cent, but most importantly that there was a greater improvement in the mathematics, physical sciences and maths literacy marks. However, there is great concern about accounting, which is one of the areas of improvement, but, generally, we are satisfied with the academic performance,” said Dlabathi.
Dlabathi further committed that his office will continue hosting the annual sports day.
“We have also committed to award the top performers in each term as a way of acknowledging their academic performance. We believe this will have a further positive impact on the overall performance of the school,” he said.
“We have also taken a decision to have regular parents’ meetings, the first meeting will be held early in the year just to lay the foundation and communicate the plans for 2019,” Dlabathi said.
Acting school principal Jabulani Nyoni said they strongly believe the school is on the right track and with the support from the office of the chief whip the culture of learning at the school is changing.

“The situation is positive and we hope 2019 will be a much better year compared to previous years. The discipline is satisfactory and teacher morale is high. Therefore, we will take advantage of those areas and undoubtedly do well come end of the year,” said Nyoni.
The mathematics pass rate has improved to 87.1 per cent and physical science to 92.5 per cent.
Head of Palesa Ya Sechaba Foundation Dolly Mokgatla said what her organisation wants to do is go beyond the academic programme and look at other programmes that can enhance the skills of learners beyond matric.
“We strongly believe entrepreneurship is an important issue for the country and the world as economies around the world are grown by good entrepreneurship environment. Therefore, we are fortunate that in our country we’ve adopted an entrepreneurship programme from the United States called Junior Achievement South Africa. As a result, we would like to start this programme in our very own township, starting with this school because we’ve already established a relationship here,” she said.
Palesa Ya Sechaba Foundation is one the organisation on board to assist with learner support with a focus on mathematics for Grade 10 and 11 learners.
