Title deed scammers on the loose

Residents who have fallen victim to this scam or others that are accompanied by claims of involvement of the Ekurhuleni metro, are urged to report these to the police or to the Ekurhuleni Anti-Fraud Hotline on 080 010 2201.

Residents are warned by the Ekurhuleni metro that title deeds for low-cost housing and other government-provided houses are not for sale, they are issued and handed over free of charge.

This comes after eight cases of title deed fraud have been reported to the South African Police Service (SAPS), since November 2018.

Ekurhuleni metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe said: “Scammers are targeting residents who are waiting for title deeds to their houses by charging them about R1 600 to issue, unbeknown to the victims that these are fake title deeds.

“In one incident, a fake title deed was issued to the victim, who was made to pay about R80 000 in an alleged sale of land belonging to the metro.”

Those who are yet to get their title deeds are advised to constantly enquire at their nearest Ekurhuleni Customer Care Centre (CCC).
