Many residents have been left frustrated with licensing department delays across the metro.
Divisional head of communication and media relations at Ekurhuleni metro Nhlanhla Cebekhulu explained the function of the department and touched on various issues that attribute to the delays experienced.

Frustrated with licensing department’s tardiness
“The department allows for renewals of driver’s licences, driver’s licence appointment tests, learner licence appointment tests and professional driving permits (PrDP),” explained Cebekhulu.
“An applicant can either apply online or do a walk-in.
“Slots are limited due to the departments’ capacity to process applications.”
The processes to follow and requirements for the renewal of licences as per Cebekhulu are:
• Book via the walk-in process or online.
• ID document or a valid passport or traffic register number are needed.
• Two ID-size photographs, black and white or colour.
• A R228 fee plus R72 if you require a temporary driver’s licence.
This, Cebekhulu added, is typically a four to six-week process, under normal circumstances.
Factors that can delay the process:
• Fingers that have no prints.
• Incorrect photograph format.
• Challenges at the Driver’s Licence Card Authority (DLCA) which are beyond the control of the metro, such as labour disputes and strikes.
• Delays in the delivery of cards from DLCA.
• Malfunctioning of the Natis systems, such as Live Capturing Units (LCU) and Live Enrolment Units (LEU) machines.
“The abovementioned process is what needs to be followed by residents as there are no alternatives,” Cebekhulu said.
