The station commander of Ivory Park SAPS, Brig David Mbongeni Ngcobo, has welcomed the heavy jail term handed to an Ivory Park man for murder, three attempted murders and assault to cause grievous bodily harm.
Capt Bernard Matimulane, the spokesperson for the station, said Vusi Godfrey Mahlangu (27), who appeared in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court, was given 15 years for the 2017 murder of Siyabonga Khumalo (26) of Ivory Park Extension Two.
He was also sentenced to another 15 years for the attempted murders of three other people, including his then girlfriend. He thought his girlfriend was having an affair with the other victims.
“During the madness that lasted a few days, Mahlangu visited his then girlfriend where he found a neighbour. He stabbed him multiple times with a pair of scissors. He died days later in hospital.
“A few days later he came back and found the woman sitting with three other men. He stabbed them all. He then fled to Ivory Park,” explained Matimulane.
Ivory Park SAPS continued to look for him until he was found in the Orange Farm area six months after he had fled. He was arrested and had been in police custody since then. All his attempts trying to get bail failed.
He was sentenced to 15 years for the murder, five years each for the three attempted murders and 12 months for the assault. The sentences will run concurrently.
“Hopefully these sentences will assist the affected families in finding the closure they so deserve,” said Ngcobo.
He congratulated the investigator in this matter, Det Const Edmond Lebopo.
“With people such as Lebopo, the detective service in Ivory Park is destined for greater success.”
