YDN Academy Career Expo held in Vosloorus
The second installment of the annual Youth Develop the Nation (YDN) Academy Career Expo was held at the Vosloorus Civic Centre on July 20.

The day saw more than 500 Grade 11 and 12 learners from four different secondary schools around Vosloorus filling the Vosloorus Civic Centre hall. These schools are Masithwalisane, Thuto Lesedi, PT Xulu and Erasmus Monareng secondary schools.

Various institutions, such as Durban University of Technology, Richfield Graduate Institute of Technology, Boston City Campus, Macmillan Education South Africa, Lucazi Civil, and Harambee Youth Employment Accelerator were invited to give learners more information on the careers of their choice.
Dimpho Thobejane the founder of YDN said the purpose of the event was to provide learners with a one-to-one opportunity with higher education institutions of their choices.
“Representatives from those institutions gave advice to the learners on the career opportunities they have,” said Thobejane.
She said the reason why YDN came up with the idea of hosting such an event is that most matric learners do not know what careers they would like to pursue after school.
“This expo will give the information needed by the learners to choose careers correctly. They will be advised on how important it is to consider your strengths and weaknesses when choosing a career,” Thobejane told Kathorus MAIL.
Other than music from different local artists, there were also dance and spelling bee competitions. The winners of these competitions each received a book voucher sponsored by Van Schaik.

Thobejane said she believes the event was a success considering the number of learners who attended was more than what they expected.
“We did not expect more than 500 learners to attend since the weather was so cold. It means these learners are serious about their futures.”
