This week’s garden tips comes from Hugo de Koningh, who is known for his daily morning walks in Jordaan Park, where he observes how nature develops and how the climate changes affect the growth of flowers, shrubs and trees in the area.
De Koningh shared ideas and learnings from his own garden.
Herb garden

A herb garden can be practical and decorative, with the aromatic plants enjoyed for their use in cooking, their fragrance or blooms. Herbs are easy to grow and a wonderful addition to your garden.
Protect plants against frost
The best way to protect plants from frosts is to cover them, especially during winter months. Bedsheets, drop cloths, blankets and plastic sheets make suitable covers for vulnerable plants.
Aloes

Aloes are drought-resistant, produce copious amounts of pollen and nectar, attracting birds and insects when they are in flower.
Clivias
Clivia miniata start to flower now. They are surprisingly water-wise and grow well in the shade.
Fuchsias
Fuchsias will grow well in either full sun or partial shade, with shelter from cold winds and must be protected from frost in colder months. They will appreciate some shade during the hottest part of the day during summer days.
To flower, they need fertile, moist but well-drained soil.
A good garden soil is recommended around plant roots, allowing them to develop a thick root base.
