Mayor Tania Campbell marks 100 days in office

Campbell marked her milestone after 100 days in office as the newly appointed mayor of the City of Ekurhuleni.

Ekurhuleni Mayor Tania Campbell released a statement on her 100th day since being elected to office in the Ekurhuleni district recently.

She said although it is not an obligation to report back on the 100th day; she felt the need to account to residents for progress made since her accession to office.

Campbell said as the lower level of government, her duty is to ensure the local municipality is getting budgets passed, and she is happy to have secured an adjustment budget for the 2021/2022 financial plan.

“The adjustment budget is focused on supporting better service delivery in crucial and long-neglected areas, such as security of water and electricity supply, roads and stormwater infrastructure maintenance and environmental management,” said Campbell.

According to the statement, the finances will be spread into various back-to-basics approaches to service delivery, which include electricity, environment and waste, roads and stormwater, human settlements, creation of work opportunities, financial management and good governance, and general valuations rolls.

She said R117-million has been allocated to promote energy security in the city, another R40-m for maintenance and R77-m for new infrastructure to minimise power outages caused by poorly maintained infrastructure.

One hundred and twelve illegal dumping sites have been cleared and progress has been made to clear the Benoni lakes and dams for environmental and waste purposes.

Regarding roads and stormwater, she said 2 100 stormwater drains were maintained and 48km of roads have been rehabilitated, 550 road signs have been installed and maintained, with 29 000m² of potholes patched.
The Impala and Kwa-Thema water reservoirs have been completed and 48 water points were installed at Mayfield Extension 15.

As far as human settlement is concerned, house development projects have started. At Leeuwpoort, 52 units are being built and 188 units are waiting for completion at Vooslorus Urban Renewal on March 30. One hundred and fifty-seven out of 197 units have been completed in Chris Hani phase two.

Per the statement, 1 100 Public Employment Programme contracts have been issued, with EPWP 220 work opportunities created in roads and stormwater maintenance.

Campbell said a new city audit committee was appointed with the full support of the multi-party coalition governance to ensure proper financial compliance and good governance by the city administration.

“Residents can make rate payment arrangements at their proposed property valuation while their appeals are being finalised in general valuations roll for 2021 to 2025 matters,” said Campbell.

Campbell added this progress has impacted residents positively; however, they still have a long way to go in ensuring service is delivered efficiently.
