GDoE responds to shortages of chairs at a Vosloorus high school
Kathorus MAIL contacted the chairperson of the SGB to confirm the delivery of the chairs at the school; however, the chairperson refused to comment.
The Gauteng Department of Education (GDoE) responded to the issue of chair shortages at PT Xulu Secondary School in Vosloorus, which led to disruptions at the school between February 16 and 17.
GDoE spokesperson Steve Mabona confirmed that the department was aware of the protest by learners that occurred at the school.
He said the school enrolled more Grade Eight learners as the Vosloorus area had an influx of new admissions for 2022.
Mabona added the matter has since been resolved whereby 800 additional chairs were delivered to accommodate all learners in classes.
“Currently, the school is functioning optimally and we will continue to monitor the situation and intervene accordingly,” he said.
“Nothing justifies the disruption of schooling, more so during a time when every day counts as we have already lost several critical school days because of Covid-19,” he said.
According to some of the learners Kathorus MAIL spoke to, they were tired of being taught in uncomfortable conditions.
The learners said the affected classes included grades eight, nine and 10.
A Grade Eight learner told Kathorus MAIL they had to sit on top of tables or stand up during lessons, while some classes conducted lessons outside.
Kathorus MAIL contacted the chairperson of the SGB to confirm the delivery of the chairs at the school; however, the chairperson refused to comment.
