WATCH: Spinners battle it out in SA’s biggest spinning competition

South Africa’s finest spinners competed in a head-to-head battle to determine the best spinner to bag the title of the 2022 Red Bull Shay’ iMoto championship.

Raging engines and nail-biting turns filled with smoke were the order of the day at Wheelz N Smoke arena in Liefde en Vrede on September 3.

The arena was packed to its full capacity as thrilled spectators gathered to attend South Africa’s biggest spinning competition.

At least 12 spinners from across South Africa showcased their skills and spinning talents for a chance to be crowned in the fourth edition of the Red Bull Shay’iMoto championship. Spinners took to the field on September 2 for the qualifiers, with the main event held on September 3.

During the motorsport event, spinners showcased their remarkable performances as they contested against the clock with obstacles on the field.

Samkeliso ‘Sam Sam’ Thubane was again crowned Red Bull Shay’ iMoto 2022 champ as he contended with other brilliant spinners from across the country. He reined victorious in the finale after going against Austin Kruger, who also showed off exceptional driving skills.

“The event was a huge success and we would like to thank the community of spinning, which I refer to as my family. I would also like to thank the local community because without them and their support, I am nothing. Wheels N Smoke is a business that creates employment for several people and I’m humbled by its success,” said Monde Hashe, owner and founder of the arena.

Hashe said this was the first biggest event with spectators to be hosted after the Covid-19 regulations.

He reiterated that the competition featured 12 athletes in total, and with the qualifiers, at least eight spinners proceeded to the finals.

The competition, which was aired, also saw kwaito star Kabelo Mabalane joining as a guest judge. He also performed.

Receiving his crown, Thubane reiterated that hard work and lots of preparation culminated in his victory. He said he was overjoyed to be the first driver to win the title back to back.
