WATCH: Services restored at Thelle Mogoerane Hospital

The protests started on March 6 and affected patients’ access to services.

The Thelle Mogoerane Regional Hospital (TMRH) assistant communication director, Joseph Monaheng, confirmed service delivery at the hospital has returned to normal.

“The situation is calm. Remember, there was a court judgment on March 13. Workers have returned to work, so there is no protest today.

“But there is still a police presence. However, the army is not here to control the protest. They were deployed to protect medical health services,” said Monaheng.

He said the protests started on March 6 and affected patients’ access to services.

“Emergency was diverting priority one and two patients and maternity was closed. Theatre and high care were severely affected because there were only a few nurses. The doctors were available, but the nurses were few.

“There was no cleaning. The HR, finance and supply chain departments were shut down because the staff were striking,” he said.

The Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, and the Minister of Health, Dr Joe Phaahla, visited TMRH to assess access to health services by communities on the morning of February 13.

The MEC expressed satisfaction that the situation across the province had improved from last week but noted that some areas still required attention.

She welcomed the Labour Appeal Court’s ruling to interdict the strike with immediate effect.

“Nehawu and all such essential service employees are restrained and prevented from continuing with or participating in any such strike, picket or any other form of industrial action.”

The Gauteng Department of Health reiterated their call to workers to immediately return to work because failing to do so would result in the no work no, pay principle being applied.
