EMPD embarks on by-law education

EMPD’s Social Crime Prevention Unit (SCPU) from the southern region conducted a by-law educational operation in the Thokoza and Alberton areas.

Describing the occasion, the media liaison officer for EMPD, Lieutenant Colonel Thepa, said, “The purpose of this operation was to educate hawkers and also check if those currently trading are registered and compliant with the law.”

He further revealed that 25 hawkers were educated on how and where to apply for trading permits and other related documents.

Many more traders were also educated on how to demarcate their trading spots to leave enough space for pedestrians to access the sidewalk or pavement to enable others to walk freely, rather than to walk on the road.

According to Thepa, this is one of many operations planned by CoE, to ensure that all hawkers and street traders comply with the trading laws of South Africa.
