Community bids farewell to crime-fighter Mandla Nkambule and sister Khosi

They arrived in large numbers to pay their last respect to local crime fighter Mandla Nkambule, who was buried alongside his sister Khosi Nkambule at the Thomas Titus Nkobi Memorial Park on September 14.

The former police officer and co-founder of the Thata Zonke Anti-Crime Unit and Yizo Yizo Crime Fighting Unit in an effort to fight rampant crime in Kathorus, died under a hail of bullets in Katlehong on September 4 and his sister Khosi died four days after his death.

Their brother, Ricky Ngwenya, told Kathorus MAIL of their pain as a family because they lost two family members in such a short space of time.

“We are trying to make sense of the whole situation. My sister was already sick, but she became worse after she was told that our brother Mandla had died.

“I will cherish the moments I had with both my siblings and today I just want to pay my last respects to my siblings and say my final goodbyes to them,” Ngwenya shared.

The former Sizok’thola host Xolani Khumalo, who attended the funeral service of the siblings, said his heart was broken by the loss of his mentor, Mandla.

“Mandla was like a father to me and he supported me throughout my court appearances. As you can see there are a lot of people here at the funeral service, Mandla didn’t only play an important role in my life alone, but in a lot of other people’s lives.

“We hope the people who took Mandla’s life will be found and arrested,” said Khumalo.

He added that they killed a person who played a vital role in various communities.

“As the people who worked with Mandla we will continue to fight crime and uphold his principles,” Khumalo expressed.

The Gauteng ANC Youth League President, Collen Malatjie, said he had known Mandla for a long time.

“He was a person who was keen on fighting crime and he always encouraged me to come up with ideas of fighting crime and drugs.

“Before he died we went to a wedding ceremony in Limpopo together and we came back, and when I had that he was shot and killed I was hurt and distressed.

“Today we have to celebrate this hero of the community who dedicated his life to fighting crime. He had zero tolerance for crime.

“I would like to take this opportunity to say to Mandla and his sister Khosi, to both sleep in eternal peace,” Malatji concluded.

The funeral service was also attended by the former mayor of Ekurhuleni Mzwandile Masina, former MMC of Human Settlement Lesiba Mpya who was the MC of the funeral service and program and other dignitaries and guests.
