In an exciting move to bolster the country’s creative industries, the City of Ekurhuleni has partnered with The Arts & Culture Trust (ACT) to launch South Africa’s first-ever Smart Theatre and Mixed Reality Lab Programme.
This forward-thinking initiative is designed to provide a transformative opportunity for performers, creators, technicians, social media specialists, and arts entrepreneurs to access cutting-edge technology and acquire vital Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) skills in virtual and immersive performance.

Application deadline approaches
The countdown has begun for those interested in participating in the Smart Theatre initiative, with the closing date for applications fast approaching February 7.
Aspiring participants who have not yet applied online are encouraged to do so before the deadline.
Who should apply?
The programme is open to individuals who meet the following criteria:
• Performers and storytellers who are eager to expand their craft by using immersive and virtual tools.
• Creative entrepreneurs looking to innovate within the digital arts sector.
• Technicians and media professionals interested in mastering advanced tools like multi-camera production, AI-assisted workflows, and virtual reality platforms.
• Applicants must be 18 years or older, based in the City of Ekurhuleni, and able to travel to the Dumisani Masilela Theatre (formerly known as the Germiston Theatre) two to three times a week.
• A minimum of a matric certificate (or equivalent) is required.
