Police visit local school
" Again, once they are high on drugs, they will misbehave and destroy their young minds.
Vosloorus SAPS, the Social Crime Prevention (SCP) unit, local pastors and members of the Community Policing Forum (CPF) held a back- to-school campaign at Ilinge Secondary School on Friday, January 13.
The communications officer at Vosloorus Police Station, Capt Piet Rossouw, explained the purpose of the campaign.
“This is a very good campaign whereby the police visit learners in schools to motivate them about life. This year we are teaching learners to stay away from crime and drugs and to abstain from sex.
“They must be told that if they commit crime and they get caught, they will be arrested and their school life will be disturbed.
” Again, once they are high on drugs, they will misbehave and destroy their young minds.
“Being involved in sex disturbs your studies because once you become a teenage mother, it becomes difficult to concentrate on your studies, knowing that you have a child waiting for you at home. Even if you are a boy, being a teenage father is not something one should want for themselves.
“So we want learners to stay away from all these social problems and focus on their education, as it is the key to their future,” said Rossouw.
According to school principal Rebecca Mohlala, the campaign was fruitful. When asked whether she thinks this campaign will help improve learners’ performance, Mohlala said it will help boost their morale.
“Most of the SGB members are the parents of these very same learners. If learners see their parents getting involved in their education, they will be motivated to do well.
“During this campaign we also spoke about the Change Foundation, a programme that helps learners obtain school uniforms, because most of the learners’ parents are not working. We don’t want these learners to stop coming to school just because they have no uniform,” concluded Mohlala.
