This follows reports of a truck getting stuck under the bridge on February 8 and another one on February 24.
In their response to the Kempton Express’ previous questions, the city could not state how many incidents had been reported to DEMS or the EMPD within 12 months.
“The query has been referred to the EMPD for the statistics,” said COE spokesperson Zweli Dlamini.

Dlamini said the incidents that happen at Elgin Road Bridge are mostly because of poor driver education and driver attitude.

He said there is sufficient warning signage for drivers to deter them from passing through the bridge, however, efforts are “as indicated unfortunately not very successful at present”.
Dlamini added that signs were provided in terms of the South African Road Traffic Signs Manual.
“Various signs have been installed and these signs are in place on all approaches and are maintained regularly by the department.”
He said that other methods the city could use to avoid trucks getting stuck under the bridge were under investigation.

These include resurfacing the road or raising the bridge.
“An investigation was done on additional methods.
“These are rather expensive and at present, the proposals are not funded due to other competing public needs,” said Dlamini.
