Youth donates clothes

"We believe very strongly in serving and reaching out to our community and uplifting those less fortunate."

Hats and Kicks hip hop group, from Tembisa, is collecting clothes from around the community to hand them over to the less fortunate. The group donated some of the collected clothes to needy learners at Boitumelong Secondary school on Wednesday last week.

According to one of the founders, Gontse Mazwi, the idea of collecting clothes came when winter started. .

“We believe very strongly in serving and reaching out to our community and uplifting those less fortunate. We only started this initiative to try and challenge the youth in the community and to start looking after the needy. The youth needs to participate more in their communities and serve what is right,” she said.

Mazwi added that they collect new and used clothes, or anything else that can help the poor.

“Our aim is to help those who are in need. It can become very challenging, especially when we go door-to-door asking for items and people do not respond positively. We need members of the community to help us to help the poorest of the poor. We need more people to join us so that we can grow,” she added.

According to Mazwi, they also give local artists a platform to expose their talents. The school RCL coordinator, Khomotso Bopape, thanked the group for their efforts in helping disadvantaged learners.

“We wish the youth in the whole area could follow in their footsteps and work together in helping needy learners. We encourage the community to donate more items to the needy. Most of our learners do not have parents and need all the support they can get. We are very grateful for any donation and may God bless them in reaching to their dreams,” she concluded.
