RESIDENTS at Allen Park had to be evacuated urgently early on Friday morning when a strong wind blew off the roof of a three-storey block of flats on the premises.
André Naudé, CEO of Kempton Park Council of the Aged, said those living in five of the flats of the Hillbrow block were removed from their homes.
It will cost millions to repair the damage, he said. Those evacuated were accommodated in other units at Allen Park. Their biggest problem is these residents’ personal belongings, which must be removed until the roof has been replaced.
The council’s hall is fully booked and they are currently looking for a place to store the furniture.
A resident of row EE, directly behind the Hillbrow block of flats, said he heard the wind and rain at about 2am. A weird sound followed and his toilet window broke.
When he opened his door, the roof’s remains were nearly on his doorstep.
