Nyope: sellers to be named and shamed
Gauteng MEC for Safety, Faith Mazibuko, visited the nyaope hotspots in Kagiso with other role players.
The Gauteng MEC for Safety, Faith Mazibuko recently paid Kagiso a visit in her continued effort to transform those troubled areas into drug-free zones.
Together with her office, members of the Kagiso South African Police Service, the Community Policing Forum and other community role players a march was held to show their disapproval and concerns regarding the nyaope drug.
“The march was made more vibrant by the presence of other areas’ community patrollers and the bikers. Patrollers from Eldorado Park, Dobsonville, Kliptown,Thokoza and Orange Farm toyi-toyed and sang struggle songs through the main streets of Kagiso to show their support,” says Brigadier Sipho Ngubane, Station Commander at Kagiso Police Station.
He says that Kagiso residents did not come out in numbers as expected
“Nevertheless the MEC was happy about the turnout, commitment and dedication by all parties involved.”
She and Ngubane led the march for more than three hours, making sure that all nyaope hot spots were visited and that suppliers and users also got a lashing and strong warning.
“Your kind of business ends now and there will be no compromise or negotiations on that. I personally will make sure that whoever gets arrested after this march is named and shamed, which will be followed by a heavy jail sentence,” says Mazibuko, referring to suppliers who apologised for their involvement in bringing the drug into the area.
• Nyaope is a dangerous combination of different drugs including Rattex, dagga, HIV/Aids treatment drugs, heroin and other.
