Contractor caught dumping illegally

"We would like to convey our regret for any inconvenience caused to the community."

The NEWS recently was made aware of illegal dumping near a quarry in the Muldersdrift area.

Concerned residents caught construction workers currently working at the new mega mall, Cradlestone busy dumping their building rubble near the quarry.

The NEWS obtained photos taken by resident Christa Degenhardt and then forwarded it to the PR director of the mall.

“Managing safety, health and the environment is an integral part of Aveng Grinaker-LTA’s business operations and we take any complaints regarding health, safety and the environment very seriously. In line with our approach, Aveng Grinaker-LTA investigated the matter,” says John Mclaughlin, Operational Executive at Aveng Grinaker-LTA who sent an official response to the NEWS.

“Aveng has a contract with the Leadcon Group, an established rubble removal company, at its Cradlestone Mall project site to remove building rubble. Leadcon Group has appointed sub-contractors to assist them with the removal of building rubble. Our investigation has established that the rubble removal truck, in the photograph submitted, belongs to a sub-contractor of the Leadcon Group.

“Aveng Grinaker-LTA was not aware that this sub-contractor was dumping the rubble at the site identified on the photographs; Aveng has been receiving receipts from legal waste sites for the rubble emanating from the Cradlestone Mall project site. These receipts (waste manifests) led the company to believe all protocols were being followed. As a result Leadcon has dealt with the matter internally. Furthermore, Leadcon currently is removing the building rubble from Cradlestone Mall dumped at the site identified on the photographs, and is being delivered for disposal at an established legal waste site.

“Aveng is committed to working closely with the Leadcon Group and plays its part in the Krugersdorp area to ensure that all building rubble is disposed of at legal waste sites.

“We would like to convey our regret for any inconvenience caused to the community and our client as a result of this incident,” concludes McLaughlin.

Degenhardt contacted the NEWS to verify that they are indeed cleaning up the area and that the residents are very happy with the outcome of this unfortunate incident.

“People must know that Muldersdrift is not a dumping ground of compost heap. It is wrong to dump and those who do it will be brought to justice,” says Degenhardt.
