Education with passion

It is her long journey in the education field that has inspired her to work with the school.

When Customer Relations Manager of Maropeng, Magel van de Venter walks into the Maloney’s Eye School, she is warmly welcomed.

Even though most of the children haven’t quite gotten their tongues around the Afrikaans name and affectionately call her “Magelie”, she isn’t perturbed.

“When I go into town, I hear this name all the time. These children know me,” she says with a grin.

Magel has been working with the school for a number of years now and it is largely due to her efforts that the pupils have decent facilities, a hot meal every day, and now two brand-new jungle gyms to play on.

It’s not only the pupils who love her, staff also look forward to her regular visits at the school. She is often greeted with a friendly hug or a teacher who stops her, wanting to chat. The principal of the school talks of her profound gratitude for all the assistance from Maropeng, largely owing to Magel. Magel has been an educator for many years, and it is this background that has contributed to her commitment to the school.

Lindsay Marshall, Maropeng’s Marketing Manager has worked with Magel for the past six years. “I think her passion and care for others is what guides her. It filters through to everything she is involved in, from the day-to-day care of the people she works with to the business, it has filtered into her CSI (corporate social investment) work.

“Magel drives us,” says Lindsay.

“We would not do half of what we do if it wasn’t for her. She is a huge influence, is incredibly conscientious, dedicated and passionate.

“I learn something from her every day. Magel’s background in education is probably what drives her to uplift this school. She is a darling; she is so committed, she creates that commitment for all of us,” says Lindsay.

Magel agrees that it is her long journey in the education field that has inspired her to work with the school.

“This is the one school that stood out for me. They are so appreciative of the smallest things, things we take for granted. I believe everybody learns and receives more by giving,” she says.
