Women taught to love their bodies

Dignity through education for Krugersdorp women.

The Cradle of Hope community centre recently held a workshop for local women to educate them on female sexuality, sexually transmitted diseases and how to take care of their bodies.

According to the centre’s founder Melodie van Brakel there is a great need in the Krugersdorp area for education in these topics.

“Women and schoolgirls are uninformed about what they can do to look after their bodies. They also seem unaware of how to celebrate and enjoy their femininity, that which makes them a lady,” she says.

Melodie says that on the other hand the high number of teenage pregnancies in the area in many cases are also due to a lack of education.

The workshop titled I Love my Body was presented by final-year psychology student Ronel Blad and touched on issues such as personal hygiene and the use of various birth control methods.

Proceedings were concluded with some time to interact over a cup of tea and a snack, and parcels with basic toiletries were handed over to each woman who attended.

“We host these workshops to make women feel worthy, to show them they have authority over their bodies and to give them some dignity,” says Melodie.

I Love my Body workshops are presented every three months. For more details visit the Cradle of facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/TheCradleofHope.
